Having my daughter has changed me forever! My daughter challenges me every day… in being more patient, creative, tolerant and spontaneous. Having children is about changing plans and breaking rules. It’s about appreciating the simple pleasures of life.
I am very passionate about eating healthy, fresh, whole, seasonal and organic food but having a enthusiastic food loving 4 year old girl at home makes me look at food in a very different way. It puts things back in perspective. My daughter enjoys a bar of chocolate and a corn on cob with equal joy. It’s her who helps me relax, take a deep breath and enjoy the simple pleasures in life without thinking too much.
One of my new year food resolutions is to not feel guilty after indulging in food that are not particularly good for me. Being with my daughter makes me realize that while it’s important to eat well on the whole, it’s alright to just look beyond good and bad and enjoy food as it is.

Unfortunately I never get organic strawberries here. Now that is not a good enough reason for me to deprive my little girl of her favorite fruits. They are in season for a very short time and I wanted to spoil her with all kinds of strawberry treats when they are available.
My daughter has made a strict rule of no cooking or baking with strawberries though. She hates the thought of me doing ‘something’ with her perfectly gorgeous fruits. The only other way she enjoys her strawberries apart from eating the fresh is in ice-cream or smoothies.
So here I am making very simple, straight forward ice-cream with fresh strawberries for my lovely little daughter. There is nothing unique, special or healthy about this ice-cream. It has just 3 ingredients – cream, sugar and fresh strawberries. This is ice-cream I grew up on and the ice-cream my daughter loves.
Notes:
Use organic strawberries and organic pasture fed cream if it’s available.
I have use Amul Fresh Cream with 25% fat
I think frozen strawberries can work fine if fresh strawberries are not available.
This is a recipe for people like me who want to make ice-cream without an ice-cream maker.
You can reduce the sugar to 1 cup but then the ice-cream might not be this creamy and soft.
Ingredients:
- 400 grams of fresh strawberries
- 400ml fresh cream
- 1 1/4 cups regular white sugar
Roughly chop the strawberry, mix it with sugar and keep it aside.
Whip the cream till it holds soft peaks. I did this by hand.
By now strawberries would have turned juicy releasing it’s water. With a fork, mash it a little and add to the whipped cream. Fold it carefully. Pour the mixture into a freezable container and freeze over night. Next morning, Get the ice-cream out and place it in a blender and blend till smooth. transfer it back to the original container and freeze once again. It took me another 5-6 hours of freezing to get it to the desired consistency.
Serve topped with fresh strawberries.

That looks so good Chinmayee. I love to make ice creams at home as we know what’s going in it. I add condensed milk to the recipe. Love your version. Those strawberries looks so fresh and plump.

loved the write-up. i am glad you are not one of those over-protective mothers who smothers their kids with dos and donts. Unfortunately that seems to be the trend now
Chinmayie January 12, 2013 4:59AM
I know what you mean Nags but I am far from an over protective mother 🙂 There are no dos and donts for most things in our home so food is least of the problem. On the whole I cook most things from scratch, stock lots of fruits and veggies and try to have healthier alternatives whenever possible but I want my daughter to have a ‘normal’ childhood with candies, french fries and cupcakes. I want her to love food on the whole and not hate her health freak mommy for stopping her enjoying treats…
