Genasaale – Steamed Rice Cakes Stuffed with Coconut & Jaggery, a guest post for Radhika of ‘Just Homemade’
24 Feb
I still remember seeing Radhika’s blog ‘Just Homemade’ for the first time. I spent a long time browsing recipes and was glad I found such an amazing blog with great recipes and even better photography! I wrote to her on twitter telling her how much I loved her blog and got a very cheerful reply back. We immediately connected as we both are from the same city. I have been in touch with her ever since and it’ sheen so great knowing her. I enjoy each and every post of hers and I am huge fan of her amazing photography and styling. I love her detailed recipes with all the required notes. Her posts clearly reflect the amount of research and thought she has put into each one of them. Whenever I see curry leaves I remember her ‘Curry leaf plant’ post and ‘Sakkare acchu’ had never looked better than her’s! I have made her ‘Bisibele Bath’ and I can confidently say that’s it’s been the best out of all the dozen variations I have tried.
I am completely honored to be guest posting for her incredible blog today. Radhika asked me if I could share a childhood favorite recipe of mine and it took me almost a month to finalize on one recipe! After a lot of thought I picked ‘Genasaale’ for my guest post. ‘Genasaale’ is a Steamed Rice Cake Stuffed with Coconut & Jaggery, which is a specialty of my community/region. These steamed sweet rice cakes are gluten free, vegan and very healthy!
I am sharing my recipe for Genasaale at ‘Just Homemade’ today. Hope you enjoy it.

I’m so surprised to find these! they remind me of snacks from home! I actually even steamed some rice cakes for pancake day for my recent post, I called them rice “crepes”, because that was really what it looked like to me. I wish I could get hold of banana leaves, that would have made it all so much better, but because I’m now in the uk, I can’t just wander into my garden to pick some ):
This is my favourite dessert, especially with jackfruit, reminds me of home, beautiful clicks as always.., lovely step-wise pictures, I wanted to use Banana leaves in some of my cooking, trying to find a Banana plant somewhere here
, so I can grow and use it!
I’ve never had a chance to try this delicious rice cake yet, but from the look of these pictures, I know I’ll love them. I LOOOVED the step by step photos Chinmayie! It’s so interesting cooking method for someone who never used the banana leaves!
Yummy! I love steamed rice cakes stuffed with coconut. Radhika is a delight, off to check out the recipe
This reminded me of a very similar dish my grandmom used to make during my childhood… rice dumplings with a coconut and jaggery filling! We used to love it so much that my brother would insist on even his idlis having the same filling
spooky…. I was thinking of that sweet when I got up in the morning. Its one of my favourites. The banana leaf gives it all a unique refreshing taste. They make those in goa around august only for a christian feast, that why its rare that we get to enjoy these.
I looove this !!! beautiful pictures chinmayie ! I m in love !
YAYYYYY!!!
Chin,
Thank you for this lovely guest post and nostalgic recipe..
You know how much I love such traditional dishes!
Oh wow this is one of my most favourite South Indian dessert! We make this on Gouri-Ganesha, except we steam them in Haldi leaves, rather than banana leaves and the flavour the leaves lend is just divine!
