Green Tomatoes in Mustard Oil



{Due to a recent virus attack I lost a whole bunch of recipe on my blog. I am slowly working on posting them back one by one. I am going to start with the recipes I am getting most requests for. A quick and easy stir-fry, bursting with flavors!


Another green tomato recipe for you all, simple and very quick. I love how the flavors of juicy green tomato flavors is working with the mustard seeds and mustard oil here. Instead of masking the tanginess of the sour tomatoes with jaggery or coconut, I am here highlighting it with pungent notes of mustard oil.

It’s really quick to make. Do not over cook it, let the tomatoes get soft but let it still hold it’s shape. If you can handle heat, go for it! Add a couple of more green chilies and it’ll only make it better. I served these green tomatoes with dal-rice but it will work well with roti or chapati also. Make sandwiches, wraps and roles and add some shredded veggies like peppers, carrots and cabbage to compliment the strong flavors of the tomatoes.

  • 8-10 green tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp mustard oil
  • 1 tsp black mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 fresh green chilies
  • salt to taste.


Cut the tomatoes into quarters and leave it aside.

Heat the mustard oil in a pan. Add the mustard seeds and wait for it to splutter. Now ass the turmeric powder, finely chopped green chilies and salt. Now add the green tomato pieces. Toss for the oil to coat well. Cover and cook in low flame till the tomatoes are soft. Sprinkle water if needed.
