Healthier Breakfast Hot Chocolate



{Due to a recent virus attack I lost a whole bunch of recipe on my blog. I am slowly working on posting them back one by one. I am going to start with the recipes I am getting most requests for. Healthier Breakfast Hot Chocolate


Life as a mother in one word is BUSY.  There is never enough time and always a million things to do. It does get to you sometimes. Past week has been pretty tiring and I desperately need a little break. Like God sent my Mom is arriving tomorrow!! She will be staying with us for a coupe of days and I can’t be more thankful for it. I totally need her in my life right now. When my mother is home, my daughter’s attention completely shifts towards her. They spend the entire day talking, playing, reading, drawing and singing and both are so happy to be together. I am free to do what I want 🙂

I have a lot of things planned out for the coming days and blogging is not really one of them. I really want  a few date nights with my husband, where we can actually eat, drink and talk without a baby around. I’ll be back with a blog post only next week sometime and until then i’ll leave you with a hot chocolate recipe.

This healthier cup of hot chocolate saves me on my busy mommy days as it’s instantly comforting without a big baggage of guilt. I don’t know about you but  to me a sinful indulgence always follows with a guilt wave which basically takes away from it.




Breakfast Hot Chocolate is thick and creamy without any cream in it. I use finger millet flour or Ragi flour as a thicker which adds body without adding calories. I can actually say this is healthy because it’s a chocolatey version of the breakfast porridge made with finger millet flour + milk + sugar. A big mug of this hot chocolate will actually keep you full for hours. I assure you that you will definitely not taste millet flour in your hot chocolate. Flour will only make it thicker and you just have to trust me on that.

You might be able to use any other millet flour of your choice with success but I went ahead with finger millet flour as I always have it on hand and it adds a darker color to the chocolate. Make it with any milk of your choice (dairy, nut, seed, coconut or soy) for the perfect taste but I have made this even with water! A handful of dark chocolate chips is optional but recommended.

Go ahead and make this your breakfast! It’s the best combination of a healthy filling porridge and a super delicious hot chocolate!

Instead of cane sugar use jaggery or any other healthier sweetener

I have used water for the hot chocolate photos here in this post and as you see it turned out great

Make this and stick it into your freezer for 10 to 15 minutes and it tastes even better!

Try adding cinnamon, ginger, vanilla or coffee for different variations of this drink.


Healthier Breakfast Hot Chocolate



  • 1 mug water/milk (use any milk of your choice here)
  • 1 tbsp finger millet flour
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 tbsp unrefined cane sugar (or any other sweetener of you prefer)
  • a handful of dark chocolate chips (optional)


Combine all the ingredients in a small pot and mix well. Slowly bring it to a boil stirring continuously and let it simmer till it thickens. Add more water/milk if you like it thinner.

Enjoy it hot.
