Oil Free Healthy Chickpea Crackers
I am constantly looking for new snack ideas. I am trying my best not to buy munchies from outside and make as many different kinds as possible myself. I feel like all my efforts to eat better are ruined by a few packs of deep fried savory snacks or sugar filled cookies. After a hearty healthy meal cooked at home I want my family to munch on nutritious snacks without compromising on the taste factor.
I was planning on making some whole wheat crackers (which I LOVE) the other day when I saw a packet of dry chickpeas in my pantry. For one moment I thought I’ll soak it and make some curry but immediately I thought why not make crackers with them!!
Chickpeas or Garbanzo Bean are a GREAT source of protein, folate, zinc, dietary fiber and are low in fat. I use them regularly in my kitchen. I had never attempted making cracker out of them but I didn’t see a reason for it to not work. I was right!! Chickpeas made awesome crackers!
I used whole wheat flour to bind it together and added a little bit of thyme for flavor. These crackers are completely oil free. They are hard, dense and have a beautiful deep chickpea flavor which I loved the most about it. Roll them as thin as possible for the best results. You can get creative with different herbs and spices and I am sure chickpea can be great base for most flavors.
Serve these amazing healthy crackers with any spicy dip, creamy cheese for a great appetizer or sweet jams/jellies for a great sweet snack!

Freshly boiled whole chickpeas

Dried thyme

make hard dough with all the ingredients

ready to bake

Chickpeas made awesome crackers!

I had mine with some cheese spread

YUM! they are hard, dense and have a beautiful deep chickpea flavor
Ingredients:
- 250 grams of dry chickpeas
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp dried thyme
Soak dry chickpeas in water for 5-6 hours or overnight. Cook them with a pinch of salt till soft.
Drain all the water and mash the chickpeas well by hand or in a food processor.
Add the thyme and salt and mix well.
Now add the whole wheat flour little by little, enough to make hard dough. I used almost a cup.
Roll the dough between two cling films as thin as possible and cut into desired shapes.
Bake in a preheated oven at 160 degree C for 25 to 30 minutes till golden and crisp.

Can I make these with canned chickpeas?
Well, honestly, there must be some great connection between lovefoodeat and my mind…
I was checking out recipes for hummus, wanted to put in chickpeas in my daughters diet – yet, she isnt comfortable with chewing them yet. I wanted some finger food – which includes chickpeas – and thought of hummus with some crakcers…..
And voila!! lovefoodeat has this delightful recipe – which includes chickpeas as finger food – will serve with her fav cheese spread!

Can these be made with canned chickpeas? They look super tasty!
Yes Julia! They can be made using canned chickpeas
Thanks for your reply. Do you know how much equals 250g dried? My can says 425g with liquid and 284g without.
Dried Chickpeas almost doubles when soaked. I would say start with one can and see how it goes. You can always double it next time.
Awesome!! Such a brilliant idea! Will try this very soon
Wonderful! There is such a beautiful rustic quality to your crackers.
so healthy!
