Spicy Green Plantain Patties
Cooking from my mom’s kitchen is a great experience, so different from cooking in a city. Here there are always some fresh fruits or vegetables grown in our own farm to cook with. Sometimes we have so much that we have to distribute it to our neighbors! We haven’t gone real vegetable shopping in over two weeks as we have had a good supply of fresh produce from the farm!
It’s great because we eat what is local. It’s all fresh and free of pesticides. All organic! We eat what’s in season and we know where our coming from.
Today we had an entire bunch of green plantains which needed to be used up before it all ripens. We usually stir fry it with spices and make different curries out of it. We also make Dosas which are Indian rice pancakes, by simply grinding soaked rice and green plantains together.
This time I made some green plantain patties and it turned out delicious. It’s really easy to make and tasted a lot better than my regular potato patties. I haven’t used too many dry spice powders and kept it simple with just fresh spices. I could still taste the plantain in it which was nice.
Serve it as a side dish with some rice and curry, make a burger or simply serve with some salad for a healthy meal.

- Green plantains – 8-10 (small)
- Onions – 3-4 (small)
- Garlic – 5-6 pods
- Ginger – 1 inch
- Green chili – 2
- Cilantro
- Turmeric – ¼ tsp
Clean the plantains trim both ends and boil them in water till soft. Make sure they are cooked very well! Otherwise you will not be able to make patties with them. When cooked peel them, skin them and mash them.
Heat oil in a pan. Add all the remaining ingredients and fry for 2 minutes. When it looks partially cooked, add the mashed plantain and salt and mix well.
Wet your hands and make patties out of it when it’s cool enough to handle. Shallow fry with oil till golden brown on both sides.

Just made these. excellent! I used my food processor to break up the plantain but I think I didn’t let them boil quite long enough because after I peeled them they were still a little hard to mash. I put them in the microwave for a couple minutes with a lil water to steam them and they broke down a bit more. Next time I’ll boil for a crazy long time lol. I had them with a spicy apricot glaze!

Thank you Tanvi! I really enjoy green plantains in curries and stir-fries but this time I wanted to try something different. They are definitely healthier than fritters.
