Spicy Peas Curry
27 Feb
We all have days when we enter the kitchen, look around and wonder what to cook. Since I am a food blogger you might think I am always full of bright ideas in the kitchen. That’s not true. I have plenty of ‘what to cook?’ days. Normally every time I am confused, my husband is faced with this super difficult question. He has a standard answer which is always ready, ‘Rice and Curry’ he says!
For South Indians one meal which can never go out of fashion is a Rice and Curry meal! We can never get tired of it. Well… there is no question of being tired of it considering the hundreds of varieties of curries we cook. All I need is some vegetable and a few spices to whip up a quick curry which is tasty and healthy.
Today I had a bag of fresh green peas in the refrigerator. Since I was out of ideas, I made this upper easy curry for lunch, which of course is made in my ‘express’ style. This recipe is very versatile. I used fresh green peas which is in season but frozen peas or any other vegetable is great here. If you don’t have fresh or frozen coconut on hand, don’t worry! Make it without any coconut. Simply increase the amount of tomato to 2 cups instead of one cup and you will be fine. It can also do fine without a little bit of cilantro garnish! Basically it’s a super easy and super quick to make curry recipe which you really need in your life!
Considering it’s short list of ingredients and ‘express’ cooking methods, it’s very tasty and flavorful. As the spice mixture or masala is cooking in oil, the whole house will smell heavenly. Here soft sweet green peas are perfectly combined with a fiery hot gravy to make a lip smacking curry.
This does not take more than 15 minutes to make if you are using frozen peas so once again this is your perfect weekday solution! Serve hot with some rotis, rice or some good crusty bread and you are sure to be one happy soul.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup chopped tomatoes
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 cup fresh/frozen coconut
- 4-5 cloves of garlic
- 3-4 fresh green chilies (optional)
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 2 cups fresh or frozen peas
- 1 tbsp salt
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp chopped cilantro
Put the first 8 ingredients in a blender with 1/4 cup of water. Blend it into a smooth paste.
Heat oil in a pan and add the spice mixture. Cook for a couple of minutes. Add the green peas and 1/4 cup of water.Season it with salt according to taste. Continue to cook till the peas are soft cooked. Sprinkle with some fresh cilantro.
Serve hot over rice or with roti.

Your photos have a lovely natural feel to it…love them! I could have that bowl of curry with some roti right now! That would be so good!
I made this tonight for dinner. We both liked the results. I will try again and may add some ginger to the first 8 ingredients and maybe add the coconut milk too. Over all very tasty. I will add all 3 chiles next time too. Thanks for the recipe and the photos.
Such beautiful images here, I really love the third one down.
Thank you Sylvie
This reminds me of my mother and the days when we used to cook with onion garlic.
I really want to make this, but was wondering about the fresh or frozen coconut….would a can of coconut milk work too? I have never used frozen coconut before.
I can of coconut milk will be good too. If using coconut milk grind all the spices with as little water as possible and then add the coconut milk after you cook it in oil. Let me know how this turns out
What stunning photos! I’m saving this to try – my family loves peas and will definitely enjoy your curry.
Gorgeous photos! I am an absolutely curry + rice fan! It’s the perfect comfort food in my opinion

i too always ask this question to hubby almost everyday… and i know always what his answer is going to be….
and you are right… for south indians it is rice and curry. i can vouch for that being a half south indian and half goan. for goans also its curry but fish curry and rice.
i am going to make this curry. the photos are so good that i want to have it right now.
chinmayie… today was my confusion day. did not know what to cook. remembered your 15 minute peas curry and made this curry today. added a few potatoes as well, just reduced the green chilies and added some garam masala powder…. it was yum but not spicy. loved it.

95 % of my days are “what to cook ” days as well
Sometimes I think about what to cook for dinner till it is too late to whip up something
This looks delish and I love that kadai
your peas curry is going to come handy. I am having a bag lying around in the fridge and I need a new curry recipe in general.
happens to me fairly often too that I simply dont get the taste for any specific food except for stuff which I cant cook/bake. rice and curry is always a life saver, right?
Lovely, I like the first picture. The light is perfect and kadai looks rustic yet the photo has a calming effect
Oh and express sabjis are a must for every Indian
I love the rustic look of that kadai, beautiful clicks, love peas curry anytime
Yummy soup like this one, really makes a perfect weekend solution. Great photos! =)
that looks wonderful, Chins! We always have ‘what to cook’ days for most of the days
i think there is a typo with the amt of chilli powder used (recipe says 12 tsp and i’m guessing its 1/2 tsp:) )
Thanks for pointing that out Sia! You guessed it right
I really really adore your picture..it’s tranquilizing..:) I’m so gonna follow your space..
The pics are amazing…Loved the peas curry… We also make it the same way in north except one ingredient and i.e. coconut. All other ingredients are same….but this time will try with coconut…
I absolutely love these pictures Chinmayie. Do you use that pot for cooking? I like the rustic texture of the pot so much. Such a beautiful photography. I am really in love with this kind of photography (yet I don’t know how to produce it myself! haha.). It’s spicy so I know I can’t eat it, but I truly enjoyed reading this post… arh… the photos!!! Amazing work!
Looks beautiful! I’m with your husband! =) Curry is always the answer!
Simple and quick dinner recipe. I make a much drier version of it and we call it pattani peratal. Sweet peas in any form is a delight and the pictures look gorgeous.
