When it’s raining outside and you have a bunch of bananas please please please make sweet banana fritters! I know it’s not the healthiest of snacks but a couple of these are very good for your soul!
This recipe is another childhood favorite. We didn’t really make too many deep fried snacks at home but this one, whenever made was a HIT. They are very easy to make and make great evening snack for kids. It can also be a tasty breakfast when you want to pamper yourself with something special.
I had some deep fried bananas in Singapore once; they were delicious but not the same. They were deep fried whole and the better has eggs and white flour in it. My version is quite different. This has just 2 main ingredients, chickpea flour and bananas! Simple!
The ingredient that makes a great difference is a spoonful of red chili powder or cayenne pepper used in the batter. I know it sounds little strange to have sweet banana dipped in spicy chickpea batter but that’s what makes this dish special. Traditionally we use coconut oil to deep fry this but you can also use any other oil.
These vegan banana fritters are lite, fluffy and sweet. Make them today and enjoy them with a hot cup of tea!

This sound amazing! I just bought some bananas at the store, now to find some chickpea flour…
How great would these be dipped in a syrupy spiced coconut milk sauce? I die.

syrupy spiced coconut milk sauce sounds soooo good
Do you have any recipe for that??
Allyn June 14, 2011 6:38PM
I’ve made it before with the cream from the top of canned coconut milk, sugar, and saigon cinnamon. I simmered it until it reduced to the thickness I wanted. Pour it over hot rice for a quickie rice pudding. Sometimes I’ve added a little fresh nutmeg too it too. It’s very versatile, and dangerous by the spoonful.

In India we make all fritters with chickpea flour. So make this batter and dip ANY vegetable and deep fry for delicious fritters!!

What did you add to the batter to make it watery? I understood the powders part, but then next picture was already batter and I don’t see any liquid in your recipe…
Chinmayie June 9, 2011 10:13AM
Hey Nami! Just add enough water to chickpea flour to make the batter. Sorry if I didn’t make myself clear in the post.
Chinmayie June 8, 2011 8:29AM
I am sorry but I don’t really know what you can substitute chickpea flour with! Where do you live? Do you have any Indian/Asian store close by? You can also look for ‘Besan’ or ‘gram flour’, all Indian stores will carry it.

Mmm, these make me want a deep fryer! Might have to try it out with pan-frying, as I have both bananas and chickpea flour and am ready to go
thomas June 6, 2011 4:38PM
I want to make this, but we dont have any bananas here. Do you think it’ll taste much different if I replace the chickpea fluor with all purpose fluor?
Chinmayie June 7, 2011 4:54PM
Hey Thomas! I don’t think you can replace the chickpea flour with all purpose flour in this recipe. There are several recipes online where they use all purpose flour with egg.

Thank you all so much!

What a tasty treat! I miss bananas, we are still waiting for the prices to go back to normal after a cyclone destroyed the banana plantations early this year.
