{Due to a recent virus attack I lost a whole bunch of recipe on my blog. I am slowly working on posting them back one by one. I am going to start with the recipes I am getting most requests for. Spicy Grape Tomato Salad


After all those Thai food photos I thought it’s time for something Indian! Nothing better than sharing a delicious yet very simple tomato salad recipe with an indian twist to it?

I bought a couple of packs of grape tomatoes a few days ago when I was planning on making Thai Green Papaya salad for a dinner party. When I cut open my ‘green’ papaya, unfortunately it was already ripe inside. So I put these little baby tomatoes back into the refrigerator and forgot about them. Today when I was digging in to find something to munch on, I found them again!

Grape tomatoes taste good even just by themselves. They are almost as good as grapes! You can just clean and store them in your refrigerator and pop them into your mouth when ever you want a juicy burst of freshness. I also add them to my green salads or pasta salads. But today I was in a mood for something more… something with a bit of tang or a touch of spice!

That’s how this Spicy Tomato Salad was born 🙂 It’s just your typical tomato salad taken to another level with some simple South Indian herbs and spices. The sweetness of the tomatoes in balanced with tangy lime juice and the heat of fresh green chili. A coconut oil tempering helps bind the flavors together and the pinch of turmeric adds a lovely warmth to the salad. It’ll take you just minutes to put together and I am sure it can be a great accompaniment to any indian meal.

You can de-seed the chili if you only want the aroma of the fresh chili without the heat.

Try other oils like peanut or sesame for the tempering.

You can use curry leaves instead of cilantro, in which case add the leaves to the tempering.

If making ahead of time, leave out the lime juice and salt and store it in the refrigerator. Add the lime juice and salt and toss everything together just before seeing.

  • 25 to 30 grape tomatoes
  • juice of one fresh lime
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1/4 tsp black mustard seeds
  • 1 small fresh green chili
  • a pinch of turmeric powder
  • a few springs of cilantro leaves.

Cut grape tomatoes into halves or slightly thinner slices. Squeeze the fresh lime over it and keep it aside. Heat the oil in a small pan. Add the mustard seeds and wait for it to splutter. Now add the finally chopped fresh green chili and a pinch of turmeric. Turn off the heat.

Pour the hot tempering over the tomato salad. Add some finely chopped cilantro and salt. Toss well for everything to coat the tomatoes.

Serve immediately.
