Sweet fruits like Mangoes, Jackfruits, Pineapples, Bananas are all used a lot in our cuisine. I wasn’t very fond of most of these dishes while growing up and now I see that my palate has evolved quite a bit. I can enjoy quite a few of these recipes, which call for ripe juicy fruits. Most of these recipes are not desserts. They are savory snacks or accompaniments like chutney, curry and relishes, which are eaten with rice or dosa.
Sour and sweet Star fruits are in season right now. When I was at my parents’ place last week, my uncle brought us some farm fresh organic star fruits. They were ripe and juicy. I made this simple quick gojju or relish with it and it turned out delicious.
Serve this gojju with hot rice, chapati, dosa or on a crisp toast.
You can replace star fruit with bimbli, mangoes or pineapples.
Use a combination of dry red chilies and red chili powder instead of green chilies for a different taste.
You can use sugar instead of jaggery too.
- 1 ½ cup sliced ripe star fruits
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- ½ tsp black mustard seeds
- ¼ tsp fenugreek seeds
- 1-2 springs fresh curry leaves
- 2-3 fresh green chilies.
- 2 tbsp jaggery powder
- Salt to taste.
Heat the oil in a pan and add black mustard seeds. When they start to splutter, add the fenugreek seeds, sliced fresh green chilies and curry leaves. Fry these for a couple of seconds till the curry leaves are crisp. Add the star fruit slices and miz everything. Add the salt and jaggery and cover and cook for 4-5 minutes. There is no need to add any water. At this point you can taste and adjust the flavors according to your taste. Continue to cook till the fruit is soft and cooked.
